What are the Prospects for Bioinformatics Positions in 2025?
Based on the companies we track (38 as of March 2025), we’ve seen 69 job advertisements (ads) for bioinformatics or computational positions. The landscape for these roles continues to evolve as biotech and pharma companies increasingly rely on computational approaches for drug discovery and development.
Our data provides a snapshot of the current bioinformatics job market — who’s hiring1, what they’re looking for, and what they’re willing to pay. Here’s the breakdown of what we’ve seen so far this year.
Most Bioinformatics Positions are Senior-Level ¶
The majority of non-management job ads are for Senior level (38 positions, 69%). Tempus AI and Illumina posted the most computational/bioinformatics job ads so far this year (2025).
Some of the Skills Mentioned:
- PhD or Masters and 3+ years of experience
- AI/ML experience (2-4 years)
- Ability to write and debug “production level code” and collaborate with software engineers
- Be accountable for statistical design and analysis of large datasets
- Experienced with R, Linux, knowledge of HPC and MySQL or Postgres
The salary ranges for the senior level roles primarily ranged from $130,000 to $200,000. Novartis posted a (now inactive) role for a Computational Medicinal Chemist with a salary ranging up to $245,700.
Entry Level Positions are Mostly Internships ¶
Unfortunately, there isn’t much good news for entry level Bioinformatics positions based on the companies we track.
As of March 2025, we’ve seen:
- 11 entry level positions from Tempus AI, Gilead, Amgen, Genentech, Natera, Merck, and Vertex
- 8 of those positions are internships or temporary summer associates, mostly hourly pay from $25 - $55/hour
- 1 postdoc for Genentech with a salary of $98,000 - $104,500
- Scientist I for Gilead ($146,540 - $189,640)
- Research Technician I for HHMI investigator at MIT ($18 - $30/hour)
So while internship opportunities are picking up, other early career scientists may struggle to break into the industry via bioinformatics roles.
However, moving forward you should keep an eye on the top-posters such as Tempus AI and Illumina. While most of their positions are “senior” the descriptions are much loser in terms of actual experience required, and they may be more flexible for seasoned post-docs or other researchers.
Salary Ranges Show a Management Premium ¶
Our analysis of salary data reveals compensation differences across career levels and position types. For individual contributors, Senior bioinformaticians command a premium with median salaries ranging from $120K to $196K, compared to Entry/Mid-level positions at $109K to $163K.
Unsurprisingly, the most substantial salary boost comes with moving into management2. Bioinformatics managers, directors, and leads can expect median salaries between $161K and $232K, higher than the $118K to $191K range for individual contributors regardless of seniority.
